Chat with student Ying Lan from Taiwan, and teachers Michael C and Vance

March 26, 2000

Maggi is in Amsterdam.  Vance met her there on Friday on his way back from the TESOL Conference in Vancouver, the first Webhead he has ever met in person, and she stayed on in Amsterdam for the weekend.  Michael and Vance have met in the voice chat room and we’re talking about the online conference we will present at jointly.  Just then, Ying appears at the Palace.  Vance joins her there …

  Ying-Lan:         Yes, I did. vnce

Vance:            Oh, Michael just asked if you could hear us on the other chat line.

Ying-Lan:         I saw that you talk to each other

Vance:            So, you have sound in your computer, but you can't get the web sound.

  Ying-Lan:         I CANNOT hear you..

  Ying-Lan:         Yes.

  Michael C:        Pity.

Vance:            But your sound is ok on the computer.  Maybe it's a plugin problem.

Ying-Lan:         But I could hear you before.

  Vance:            Before today, you mean?

  Ying-Lan:         Let me check netscape.

  Vance:            k

  Vance:            We'll wait.  No problem.

  Vance:            Hi there.

  Michael C:        No luck Ying?

  Ying-Lan:         I am here

Vance:            It's actually fewer than 10,000  Michael has asked on voice chat how many were at the TESOL conference

Vance:            Hi YL.  I solved my problem by buying a new computer

  Ying-Lan:         What's your point?

  Ying-Lan:         Really?

  Ying-Lan:         New computer?

Ying-Lan:         But I could heard you before..

Vance:            Yeah, I got a Sony VAIO

Vance:            I don't think it's us though.  Maybe you've lost the plugin in the crash you had.

Ying-Lan:         Only you.... today? Where is maggi.

Vance:            Maggi is still in Amsterdam.  I saw here there myself a few days ago.

Ying-Lan:         I hope so.. But the same situtaion happened at IE 5 and Netscape 4.5.

  Ying-Lan:         I see...

Vance:            Let me check the plugins in Netscape

Ying-Lan:         Is it suprised to meet Maggi?

Vance:            Yeah, really, she's really a nice person.  We had a great time together.

Ying-Lan:         Was it surprised to meet Maggi ?

Michael C:        What's your Sony like Vance? I saw the little Sonys this week - amazing.

Vance:            We planned to meet there on my way back to Abu Dhabi.

Vance:            Yeah, it works pretty well.  I'm in the Palace, the voice chat room, on ICQ, writing in Word, sending email, and talking happily.

Vance:            Also the text chat room, forgot about that one.

  Ying-Lan:         You've gotten talent.

Vance:            So YL, what about your computer?

  Michael C:        Laptop or desktop?

  Vance:            laptop

Michael C:        Thought so....yes YL - what happened to your PC?

  Ying-Lan:         I don't know... It is normal ...

  Ying-Lan:         It is o.k.

Michael C:        But you had problems last week didn't you?

  Ying-Lan:         Yes, I did.

Ying-Lan:         But another girl had same problem.

Michael C:        Did you or your brother fix them?

  Vance:            What was the problem?

Ying-Lan:         My computer did not work when vance in Vancouver.

Ying-Lan:         But my brother fixed it last week.

Vance:            That's really a shame, because you have a fine voice and it would have been great to hear you.

Vance:            At least you were there.  That was super.

  Ying-Lan:         Thanks.

  Ying-Lan:         Great Vocie????

Michael C:        Yes Ying - you do!

Vance:            You do. You have a strong speaking voice

Ying-Lan:         Really.. It is the first time that I heard it.

Michael C:        Well it's true YL.

  Ying-Lan:         Strong Voice.

  Ying-Lan:         Thanks.

Ying-Lan:         Vance,,, my producer of real player has expired... I forgot how to download it again.

Michael C:        So it would be nice to hear your voice again at hearme.com

  Ying-Lan:         I hope so. Micaelc.

Vance:            You go to Real.com - not sure how you get it for free there if you've already installed it.

Ying-Lan:         Do you think it is my problem not hearme.com's?

Michael C:        I don't know Ying. All I know is that it won;t work on Netscape for me anymore but it does for Vance!

Ying-Lan:         I went there yesterday, but I could not find the softwear.

Vance:            I'm checking my netscape plugins.  I have a hearme voice creator, enabled. Do you?

Vance:            THis is the file you should have: npevp.dll

Vance:            Do you know how to see your plugins (Help / About plugins)

Michael C:        Well my Netscape says mine is enabled too but it doesn't load. It says 'loading plug in' but it never loads. Ah - maybe that file is

the key!

  Vance:            Mine is at: C:\PROGRAM

       FILES\NETSCAPE\COMMUNICATOR\PROGRAM\plugins\npevp.dll

Vance:            Hey, someone captured the king!   Vance has noticed that one of the chess pieces he’d placed there earlier has disappeared

Ying-Lan:         Waht do you mean? Vance

  Vance:            Ah, Michael had it.

  Ying-Lan:         i SEE

  Vance:            Now that's cute, YL

Michael C:        I just wanted some new props. But I actually don't like chess much.

  Vance:            mate

  Michael C:        Ok. Whatever!

Ying-Lan:         I don't know how to play chess.

  Ying-Lan:         Even Chinese chess.

Michael C:        You can actaully play it here at the Palace somewhere. We used to do that with Dave W.

Ying-Lan:         I am bad at math.

  Ying-Lan:         David Winet?

Michael C:        Yes - that Dave.

  Ying-Lan:         When? Friday

Michael C:        No about 2 years ago Ying. Does Dave still have a weekly class here?

Ying-Lan:         I have not idea that.

Vance:            Do you still meet students here, Ying Lan?

Vance:            I know you were holding classes.

  Ying-Lan:         No...

Ying-Lan:         I came here on Friday but nobody come in.

Vance:            What time were you meeting on Friday?

Ying-Lan:         I stopped to come here on Firday night.

  Vance:            You stopped coming.

  Ying-Lan:         Yes, I stopped coming.

  Ying-Lan:         I am bad..

Vance:            There are 4 interesting verbs in English.  If you say you stop doing something it's different from stopping to do it.

Vance:            The other 3 verbs like that are remember, forget, and regret.

Ying-Lan:         I knew it... just forgot it sometimes.

  Ying-Lan:         Thanks , Vance.

Michael C:        Anybody got any bukiding blocks?

Ying-Lan:         I had not met Vera for a long time.

Michael C:        I mean building blocks?

Vance:            Oh, guess what, I met her in person in Vancouver.

Ying-Lan:         You met Vera in Vancouver?

  Michael C:        What's she like?

  Ying-Lan:         That's great!!!

  Ying-Lan:         How was she?

Vance:            I mentioned her at one of her presentations and said she was from Venezuela. She came up afterwards and told me she was from Brazil.

Michael C:        Was Dave Winet, or any other EFI teachers there?

Vance:            You've seen her picture at study.com I'm sure.  She looks about like that, a little older maybe.

  Vance:            Dave wasn't there I don't think

Vance:            I'm not sure who the other efi teachers are ...

Michael C:        There was talk of EFI teachers having a meeting there...

  Vance:            I vaguely recall that.

Vance:            Never heard more about it though.  I don't interact much with the other teachers, do you?

Michael C:        No I don't anymore. Webheads has become my world!

  Michael C:        EF who?

  Vance:            EF who?  EFI?

  Vance:            knock knock who's there?

Michael C:        Yeh - just kidding. I miss contact with dave actually. Maybe I should hassle him with some q's!

  Ying-Lan:         I think

  Michael C:        I dunno Vance. Who's there?

Michael C:        You think what Ying?

  Ying-Lan:         Dave is busy.

Michael C:        He was ALWAYS busy.

Michael C:        partly cos people like me used to always bug him with q's!

Michael C:        He taught me a lot actually.

  Ying-Lan:         Say hello to Dave..

Vance:            I did a session with him at one of the conferences, and one of the other EFI teachers

Vance:            I can't even remember who the other one was ...

Michael C:        I will Ying. When was that vance?

Ying-Lan:         Vance you met Dave in Vancover?

Vance:            A few years ago, can't even remember where exactly ... I didn't see Dave in Vancouver, YL.  He sends me candidates for the webheads class though.

Vance:            Mostly, people want to study "English in 3D" whatever that is.

Michael C:        Was I an hour late tonight Vance? We've just gone off daylight saving and I'm a bit confused. (I'm a bit thick.)

Vance:            Yeah, I think you were MC.  No matter.  I was doing other things.

Ying-Lan:         I am sorry, I am tired ;now.

Michael C:        I think English in 3D is here - in the Palace. So what then is the GMT time of this class?

Vance:            The gmt classtime as always is 11:30 a.m.

Michael C:        So you're going Ying?

Vance:            That never changes, does it?

  Ying-Lan:         Yes.

Ying-Lan:         My young brother want to use computer.

Vance:            I have to go too.  It was VERY nice to see you Ying Lan.

Ying-Lan:         He will leave for his job tomorrow.

  Ying-Lan:         Me, too.

Vance:            And sorry we couldn't talk with you.

Michael C:        me too - have to go I mean. But...

  Ying-Lan:         What a pity!

Vance:            Does your brother have to go far away?

Michael C:        ..this means I will always come in at 12.30 GMY from now on - while we're on winter time here.

Ying-Lan:         Yes, he does. He works in another city.

Michael C:        12.30 GMT. (And no, GMY time does not change.)

Vance:            I don't think GMT changes ... what is GMY?

Michael C:        GMY is a mistake! = GMT!

Ying-Lan:         o.k. see you next week.

  Ying-Lan:         bye-bye

Michael C:        OK - time to go and do other stuff. Night Ying.

Vance:            ok, bye YL.  See you next week I hope.

  Ying-Lan:         bye

Vance:            See you later too, MC?  I gotta run (literally, 5 k race tonight)

Vance:            Nice talking to you though.

Michael C:        OK. Race? As in you want to win?

Vance:            No, I want to jog. Some people race to win.

  Vance:            not me; too old
