THE ISSUES

Who knows what our experts will find for you in Long Beach? EDUCAUSE'99 may be the largest-ever higher education conference. We've already put hyperlinks to some of the interesting papers on this week's event site: http://www.cren.net/know/techtalk/events/educause99.html.

CREN will be capturing the highlights for you in the words of knowledgeable experts who are there, attending events, and who will comment on the hottest issues and the most interesting things they've learned. Listen to CREN's Tech Talk at your desktop and email your questions to the experts at expert@cren.net.

OUR GUEST EXPERTS

John Bucher is Director of Information Technology at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. Prior to coming to Oberlin he was the Director of Computing Services at the University of South Dakota from 1987 to 1993, and the Director of Computing and Network Services at Kansas State University. He has been involved in higher education computing since the mid-'70s and is very active in professional organizations, including ACM SIGUCCS (board member and chair, 1991 - 1999), Educom (Institutional Trustee, 1997-1998), and Educause (Recognition Committee, 1998 - present). Bucher currently serves on CREN's Board of Trustees.

Barbara J. O'Keefe is a Professor in the School of Information and Director of the Media Union at the University of Michigan. She came to the U-M in September, 1998, from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she held the position of Professor in the Department of Speech Communication, with additional appointments as a Professor in the UIUC Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Senior Research Scientist at the National Center for Supercomputing Applica- tions, and Director of the Advanced Information Technologies Laboratory in the UIUC Library - among other roles.

Howard Strauss is Manager of Academic Applications at Princeton University and is widely known as an expert on the World Wide Web. He's presented workshops and sessions for years at conferences such as EDUCAUSE'99, co-hosts CREN's Tech Talk with the Experts series, and is featured in one of CREN's Virtual Seminars, Untangling the Web.

CREN's Executive Director Judith Boettcher will serve as Co-host, along with Howard Strauss who this week wears two hats, one as Guest Expert and the other as Technology Anchor.

******** SOME RESOURCES AND BACKGROUND INFORMATION

We know Howard will talk about XML, so here's an October 18 article from Network Computing entitled Riding the Next XML Wave, by Christy Hudgins-Bonafield. http://www.networkcomputing.com/1021/1021colbonafield.html

The Society for College and University Planning featured Barbara's U-M Media Union as one of "Tomorrow's Learner-Centered Environments" during a SCUP-PBS telecast last year. The related Web resource is still available here. http://www.scup.org/tomorrow/

And what better to provide in a list of resources than the website for EDUCAUSE'99 - Celebrating New Beginnings? http://www.educause.edu/conference/e99/

There's already an EDUCAUSE'99 online Proceedings available of presentations whose authors provided information in advance. http://www.educause.edu/asp/doclib/search.asp?Search=edu99

*******Some of those which might be of special interest include:

Virtual U: The University Simulation Game by William F. Massy

Collaborative Support for the Distributed University by Anne Agee, Keith Segerson, and John Zenelis of George Mason University

Using E-mail as an Official Means of Communication by Marian Ritland and Sue Shelton Moore of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire

Putting Java to Work at UCSD: A Success Story by Ron Block, Henry Jaime, and Jude Poole of the University of California San Diego

How Did He Get to See That? Authorization on the Web by Albert Steiner of Northwestern University

Meanwhile, as you think about the "hottest issues" facing higher education information technology professionals - you may be fascinated to read about the insights of a thinker from what seems like a long, long time ago in the new book "Digital McLuhan: A Guide to the Information Millennium" by Paul Levinson.
