Pierre Bourdieu, an internationally renowned sociologist whose critical (in both senses of the word) work on social and cultural capital has been invaluable to understanding educational processes, has died of cancer. Le sociologue Pierre Bourdieu est mort
cette nuit à l'hôpital Saint-Antoine de Paris des suites d'un
cancer. Il avait 71 ans. Titulaire de la chaire de sociologie au Collège
de France, Bourdieu renouvela la sociologie française dans les
années 1960 et lui donna une envergure qui dépassait les limites
de la discipline. Ses notions de champ, d'habitus sont passées dans la
langue courante des chercheurs.
