Mounira El Tatawy, 1969-2002

Mounira El Tatawy, an English language educator/applied linguist from Alexandria, Egypt and a doctoral student at Teachers College, Columbia University, died in an automobile accident on January 6, 2002, in Alexandria.

I first met Mounira at TESOL international conference in Seattle in 1998. I was immediately impressed by her warmth, sincerity, and kindness, as well as for her enthusiasm for her profession and for life. A couple of months later, I moved to Egypt for three years, and Mounira was among the professionals I worked with most closely there. Mounira was an international leader in the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and she contributed a great deal toward developing the ESP program at Alexandria University into one of the finest in the world. She was a passionate and dedicated professional who was always available to participate and help out in any venture, whether it be a conference, research project, or training program. She was also an extremely bright and loving person who brought joy to the many hundreds of people with whom she interacted, no matter what background, religion, or culture they were from. I counted on her warmth and support on many occasions in Egypt.

Mounira had been in New York 1 1/2 years pursuing her doctorate. She lost a close friend in the September 11 attack, and her friends and family were naturally concerned about her well-being in New York. She returned to Alexandria for a short visit over the new year and was killed in an automobile accident there.

Good-bye, Mounira! We will try our best to live up to your example: your passion for knowledge and understanding, your dedication to excellence, your love of life, and your enthusiasm to live every waking moment to its fullest.
