Just got back to California today. Last trip in India was to Bangalore. A very pleasant city at over 1000 meters altitude. Very cool there, and it's also a nicely run city and state. This is where the big hitters are in the Indian software (and hardware) industry, and there are lots of them.

I really enjoyed India. A remarkably multicultural, muli-ethnic, multilingual country, and a very tolerant one at that. A lot of fascinating IT-for-the-masses projects, which will make a good contribution to my in-progress book (Dissecting the Digital Divide, to be published by MIT Press in 2002). (For a few examples of projects there, see http://www.simputer.org, http://www.tenet.res.in/, http://gyandoot.net/).

My warmest thanks to all those in India and China who hosted my visits there. And congratulation to Chinese friends for winning the bid for the 2008 Olympics. May your preparations for the games spur you to build a greener and more humane capital city and nation.

I'll be in Irvine a week or so and then off to Brazil--
Mark
