CFP: Technology in Language Education

Dear Colleagues

We are pleased to inform you that the Language Centre, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Department of Applied Foreign Language Studies, Nanjing University are jointly organising the 2001 International Conference "Technology in Language Education: Meeting the Challenges of Research and Practice" from 26 June to 30 June, 2001.

The keynote speakers for the conference are:

• Professor Thomas Robb (Kyoto Sangyo University, Kyoto, Japan),
• Professor Roland Sussex (University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia),
• Dr Mark Warschauer (America-Mideast Educational & Training Services, Cairo, Egypt) and
• Professor Yang Huizhong (Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai, China).

Proposals for papers, demonstrations, colloquia, workshops, and poster sessions are invited in the following areas:

• Issues and trends
• Innovation, implementation and integration
• Teacher education
• Self-directed and lifelong learning

Selected papers and summaries will be published in our special conference CD-ROM.

Dates and Venues

• 26 - 27 June, 2001: HK University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong
• 28 - 30 June, 2001: Nanjing University, Nanjing

Presentation Types

• Paper presentation (30 minutes + 10 minutes' Q & A) A formal presentation in relation to theory and practice.
• Demonstration (40 minutes) A non-commercial presentation of teaching techniques or multimedia products and initiatives.
• Colloquium (85 minutes) A forum for a small group of presenters to share their views on a current issue. An initial presentation will be followed by participant discussion.
• Workshop (85 minutes) A session with hands-on activities and audience participation.
• Poster session (in Hong Kong and / or Nanjing) A display illustrating a project related to the theme of the conference.

Exhibition

There will be an exhibition of products and services related to the use of technology in language education. Publishers and computer companies are invited to make use of this opportunity to display and demonstrate their products, facilities, systems, software, activities and services.

• 2 March, 2001 Notification of acceptance of abstracts
• 23 March, 2001 Early Bird registration deadline
• 8 June, 2001 Registration deadline
