I just received, and read through, the following brief (88 p.) book. The article on "The decline of the
native speaker" is particularly interesting and well-documented--a nice
follow-up to Graddol's earlier book on the future of English. The basic point is that the number of
English native speakers as a percentage of the world's population is declining
sharply (at the same time that the number of English
"second-language" speakers is growing fast, thus shifting the
dynamics of the language. The relationship of globalization and localization to
language is a theme of the entire booklet....mark
