Included below is a newsletter about a World-Bank sponsored program to help students from developing countries get linked to Internet projects.

On another matter related to the Net's democratic potential, you might want to have a look at Salon magazine's report on "The Cybercommunist Manifesto" (http://www.salon1999.com/tech/log/1999/09/10/cybercommunism/index.html ). The Salon article itself is rather brief, but it includes links to a more interesting ongoing debate between a British Marxist and a Wired Magazine editor about the role of the Internet.

Special project to reach out to the children of Turkey

Our thoughts and prayers are with our friends in Turkey as they try to recover from the devastating earthquake that recently struck their country. Please, if you have a free moment, let the people of Turkey know that they are not alone and offer the comfort that comes with a message from the heart.

Together with many partner organizations around the world, WorLD-Turkey is helping to sponsor "TO TURKEY WITH LOVE: MESSAGES FROM THE HEART OF THE WORLD." This project will collect e-mail messages from all over the world for distribution by local volunteers in Turkey and posting on a web site in the country. Please consider getting involved -- it would only take a few moments.

more information about this project, including directions on how to get involved, is available at http://www.world-links.org/contact-turkey

WorLD school in Paraguay wins Internet competition!

Centro de Capacitación Técnica de Luque, one of the first WorLD schools in Paraguay, recently won a prestigious national educational Internet competition. Luque, a public school, competed against 35 far better-endowed private schools in winning the competition. Prizes included new IBM computers, scholarships, and free Internet connectivity.

The achievements of the teachers and student at the Luque schools is a great demonstration of how the WorLD program can help to equalize educational opportunities between private and public schools, and between upper and middle class students.

It is also a testimony to the hard work of the Paraguayan students and teachers active in the WorLD Program in Paraguay. Congratulations!!

International I*EARN conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Educators from around the world, including WorLD program coordinators, teachers and students from 12 countries, met recently in San Juan, Puerto Rico as part of the 1999 I*EARN International Conference to plan collaborative project activities for the next twelve months. I*EARN, a WorLD program partner organization, is a global community of youth, teachers and youth service leaders committed to using telecommunications to make a meaningful difference in the world.

Internet Training in Accra, Ghana

One of the August's training highlights was in Ghana, where teachers from 14 schools throughout the country attended "first generation" WorLD training workshop held at Aquinas School in the capital city of Accra. 44 teachers were awarded WorLD program certificates at the end of their weeklong workshop on integrating "tele-collaborative" school projects into their curriculum.

Cool tools and web sites!!

A great new web site has been launched to help protect students while surfing the Internet. "GetNetWise" (http://www.getnetwise.org ) contains information on software to block inappropriate material, strategies for keeping your students "safe" on the Internet, and much more! Unfortunately some of the content is USA-centric, but the general information should be helpful to schools all over the world.

more info on this and other valuable tools for teachers is available in the "resources" section of the WorLD web site at http://www.worldbank.org/worldlinks/english/html/resources.html
